Modafinil - is a nootropic that stimulates the secretion of neurotransmitters responsible for concentration and is the best combination of facts. Simply put, it's a kind of "doping" for the brain that works more effectively. Today, healthy people around the world are using it on a massive scale. From pilots to Barack Obama.
Brain working at 100%
In the movie "Limitless," the character of a dissatisfied writer played by Bradley Cooper receives a mysterious drug that, after taking it, "unlocks 100% of the brain's potential." Unfortunately, there is a small problem - life-threatening side effects. We have seen a similar vision of impressive consequences in the photograph of barriers that supposedly hinder our mind from fully realizing its potential in Lucy with Scarlett Johansson. Not by chance, this theme is relevant in pop culture right now, when after experiments with body-stimulating drugs, the era of brain doping has arrived.
This term is usually used to refer to a group of neurostimulants, that is, drugs that activate certain parts of the brain. With their help, since the second half of the 20th century, they have been used to combat narcolepsy, ADHD, or depression. However, all measures taken so far were intended for a narrow group of people struggling with serious mental disorders, and often were associated with unpleasant side effects. Everything except one - Modafinil, known in the USA as Provigil. Some researchers, and among them thousands of students, lawyers, stockbrokers, pilots, and Silicon Valley stars, claim that we have discovered the perfect neurostimulant. Are you sure?
Is Modafinil dangerous?
A group of scientists from Oxford and Harvard in a recently published article in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology seems to confirm this hypothesis. Modafinil, which has been used in people with sleep disorders, actually improves cognitive skills in healthy individuals. In the analyzed 24 studies involving different groups of people who took it, the correctness was in improving decision-making skills, planning, information processing, and, above all, focusing on the task at hand. However, the neurostimulant did not enhance the creative abilities of any of the participants in the numerous experiments. One proposal, the longer the tests lasted, the more Modafinil allowed to focus on continuous work on a complex problem.
Despite its wide distribution, scientists still do not know how Modafinil affects our brain. Its duration of action is approximately 15 hours. Over this time, at an average dose of 100-200 milligrams, there is a significant increase in the production of norepinephrine and dopamine - two extremely powerful neurotransmitters. Dopamine, in particular, reduces symptoms of drowsiness and significantly increases the body's ability to focus and mobilize for long-term intellectual efforts.
Non-therapeutic use began with the military, who showed interest in Modafinil. It has been used in extreme sleep deprivation situations, where the key factor in the success of the operation was the prolonged activity of soldiers and maintaining their attention. That's how many pilots during World War II conducted long night bombings. The French Foreign Legion even confirmed that Modafinil is used in its ranks during secret operations that require meticulous preparation and long waiting for orders from participants. It is no secret that the governments of the USA, UK, and India are also experimenting with enhancing the efficiency of their pilots using similar neurostimulants.
