Lutein and Zeaxanthin are types of pigments found in plants called carotenoids. Carotenoids are what give many fruits and vegetables their bright red, orange, and yellow colors. The name lutein actually comes from the Latin word luteus, which literally means yellow. Carotenoids play a vital role in the growth and protection of many different plants, but when consumed in a healthy diet, they also benefit humans.

Although they cannot be produced in the body, lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate in the eyes from food. In fact, lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids found in significant amounts in the macula. The macula is an area of the retina with a high concentration of specialized photoreceptor cells responsible for clear focus on objects directly in front of you. With so much light entering the eye and cellular activity sending these visual signals to the brain, the retina is an area of high oxidative stress.

Lutein helps filter high-energy blue light from the sun and artificial light before it reaches these important photoreceptor cells. Otherwise, blue light can cause oxidative stress and potential eye damage from free radicals. Zeaxanthin is preferentially placed in the very center of the macula. This area is most responsible for sharp central vision. Due to this location, zeaxanthin can provide additional eye health benefits compared to lutein supplements. Lutein and zeaxanthin are not produced in the body, so they must be obtained from food.
